Extra-Label Drug Use. . The general standard of practice in veterinary medicine includes frequent use of medications in "off-label"or "extra-label"fashion because of a paucity medications approved for pets. For this reason this well-established practice is tacitly, if not explicitly, approved by the FDA. Off label or extra-label means use of a drug in a manner not in accordance with the FDA-approved labeling for the medication. This includes, but is not limited to, use in different species, different doses, different frequencies, or for treatment of different problems other than those originally intended. While no guarantees can be made, this is generally considered to be reasonable and safe for a majority of medications used in this fashion a majority of the time. Friendship Springs Veterinary Care endeavors to follow the current standards prevalent in the veterinary community when using medications off-label or extra-label, and in as low a risk to pets as possible.
